The Legion of Good Will (LBV) encourages reading in its Schools and Social Service Centers. By means of its socioeducational programs and projects, literature becomes edifying and it is encouraged in all generations right from the earliest age.

CURITIBA, PR — O estímulo para o gosto pelos livros também ocorre por meio de projetos que incluem momentos de contação de histórias e passeios a feiras literárias.

In the schools, in addition to integrating the teaching content in order to educate students with excellence, the incentive to appreciate books takes place within a process that includes teachers, students, and the family. In this way, everyone is made aware of their role in increasing the cultural appreciation of students.

For the babies, children’s books are placed in the activity room, within reach of their little hands, so they become initially interested in colored pictures. This is the moment when the teachers take the opportunity to teach them songs and other activities that help develop their cognitive skills.

In the LBV’s Alziro Zarur Nursery School in Taguatinga (Brazil), teacher Tatiana Alves points out the importance of this encouragement for those who still do not know how to read: “Reading precedes writing, so it’s very important not only for the kids, but for all of us.”

She explains that every weekend the older children take home a literary folder with a book to read with their family. The support from parents is essential in this process, as the teacher emphasizes: “When parents read to their child, what do you see going on there? Union in the family. The parents are also acquiring knowledge and helping us with their child’s education.”

The principal of the Jesus Nursery School, which is maintained by the LBV in the city of Belém (Brazil), Margarida Martins, says that this encouragement leads to a special moment: an exchange of knowledge among the children. “One of the interesting facts is the transmission of cultural information and education, because they also bring their experiences and readings of the world when they interpret the stories they read. This enables children to develop and learn, because it improves their concentration and writing,” she explains.

The social and educational units of the Legion of Good Will have libraries and/or reading rooms equipped with a vast amount of publications for children and youths, which contribute to the students’ education. The Organization also carries out projects that include storytelling and trips to literary fairs.

In the Social Service Centers, the LBV promotes the development of children’s reading habits, good writing, and logical reasoning by means of the Learning Workshop, one of the activities of the program LBV — Children: The Future in the Present!
