The role of the Legion of Good Will
The Legion of Good Will (LGW) participates actively in the UN for more than 10 years. It was initially recognized by the Department of Public Information (DPI) in 1994, and in 1999, received the general consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The LGW is also member of the Conference of the NGOs in Consultative Status with the United Nations (CONGO).
The general consultative status allows the Legion of Good Will to contribute to the programs and work objectives of the UN, acting in the quality of technical experts and consultants for the intergovernmental process of the United Nations.
In this way, it can participate in the meetings of the ECOSOC, make oral interventions and present written declarations about the themes included in the work agenda, besides being able to propose new themes to be submitted for appreciation. Organizations such as the LGW are also invited to participate in the international conferences convoked by the United Nations.
In September 2000, at a meeting where official delegations of the 192 member countries were present, 8 specific objectives were stipulated to guide the efforts of all the participants and that refers to the combat of poverty and sustainable development:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
2. Achieve universal primary education;
3. Promote gender equality and empower women;
4. Reduce child mortality;
5. Improve maternal health;
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
7. Ensure environmental sustainability;
8. Develop a global partnership for development.
The LGW has greatly supported this worldwide campaign through its socioeducational actions and, more recently, through articulation of other social Brazilian entities, promoting meetings and disseminating information in dozens of cities in Brazil and Latin America. From such activities arouse the Solidary Society Network, which has contributed, in a regionalized manner, for a greater intersectorial action in favor of integrated sustainable development. Annually, the LGW presents the results of these actions to chiefs of State, ministers and High Commissioners, who gather every year during the High Level Segment of the ECOSOC.
Besides the role of mobilizing the civil society around the UN’s themes of interest, the LGW also participates, in New York, as a member of the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns at the UN. The objective is to contribute to an open and practical debate about the importance of Ecumenical Spirituality in global development, idea defended by the LGW since its origins. In this way, many seminars and events inside the UN have attracted the attention of worldwide authorities regarding this subject of great value.

T}The United Nations (UN) is an international organization formed by 192 sovereign States, founded after World War II to maintain peace and security in the world, foment cordial relations among nations, promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.
The members are united under the United Nations Charter, an international treaty that states the rights and obligations of the International Community States.
The United Nations are constituted by six main administrative bodies: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court Justice and the Secretariat. All of them are located at the headquarters of the UN in New York, with the exception of the Court, which is located in The Hague, Holland.
Linked to the UN are specialized organisms that work in diverse areas such as health, agriculture, civil aviation, meteorology and labor, for example: WHO (World Health Organization), ILO (International Labor Organization), World Bank and the IMF (International Monetary Fund). These specialized organizations, together with the United Nations and other programs and funds (such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), compose the System of the United Nations.
